The term "domestic wine" refers to any wine that is produced within one's home country. Many countries feature their own unique wines with their own unique characteristics, and America is no different. There are dozens of vintners throughout the country, many with international reputations for quality.
California is well known for its domestic wine. The climate of the state is ideally suited to the production of grapes, and is often compared to the Mediterranean in this regard. Since the first wine was produced here during the late 18th century, the California wine industry has grown to become one of the most highly regarded in the world.
A domestic wine is often labeled differently than it would be in Europe. European wines are often labeled according to the region in which they were created, with each region specializing in a specific type of grape. Because American wineries are not regulated as to which type of grape can be used in any given location, they are most often labeled according to the "type" of wine.
